prep phrases: at home vs. at the beach

Why do we use a determiner in front of some nouns and not in front of others? For example: at the station, at the store, at the airport; vs at home, at work, at school?

I have never thought of this critically before but I guess it is because we only have one home (though some people may be rich and have more than one

I think the reason is that "at school", "at work", and "at home" are considered as fixed idiomatic adverbs. Even if there's only one beach around and everyone knows what beach you are talking about, I don't think you can say "I'm at beach", but you would say "at the beach". So it's just a matter of using idiomatic English... You'll get used to it.
