I tried to find a single word that means "most important", but I couldn't. I wanted it for use like "If you get hurt, the --- thing to do is to stay calm." I did find the word "quintessential", but I think that word also has another meaning which is used a lot more frequently. I'm also not sure if it would work in the same context as I'm looking for, meaning that I'm looking for a word that basically could be replaced with the words "most important" in any sentence and vice versa. Since I couldn't find a word, I decided to make up my own, but I couldn't find a prefix that means "most". Thank you for your help!

I think all the words that have been suggested are just synonyms for "important". Though they are stronger than the word "important", they don't suggest that something is the SINGLE MOST important thing in a group, just that it is very important. I realize I may have to invent one, which is fine.
