Essay & Composition Writing

Preference of colon /+ capitalisation in brackets

The title of a certain student's essay is "My favorite Season". (I don't add the content of the essay)

Below is a teacher's comment about it.

First, we can discuss its strong and weak points with its content. As a virtue
this essay includes lots of examples related to the topic and title "My Favorite
Season". For example, the writer mentions about the weather, clothing, outdoor
activities that he can enjoy during the summer. Such mentions make this essay so
affluent in content. On the other hand, it violates the principle of coherence

Q1) I have noticed that people do not enjoy using colons. (At least people who are preparing for the English teacher exam)

I think the underlined can be rephrased like "~~ and title: "My Favorite Seacon".

What do you think? If it is OK, is using semi colons just people's preference or formal or informal things?

Q2) Does "Such mentions" sound OK? (p.s. the capitalisation in brackets is OK? or should I make it a small letter?)

Is it another way to say it?

Top answer

Q1) The title at the top of an essay should not be used with quotation marks [those are neither colons nor semi-colons]. The quotation marks would be used when referring to it. Q2) 'Mentions' is not the word you want.
