Which of the following structures/constructions is correct?

1) To prefer something/someone to something/someone else

2) To prefer something/someone over something/someone else

Thank you.

You see both. "To" is the plainer version. I think there is some difference in use, but I can't think of an example where one is clearly wrong.

Both are OK, but 'to' is used much more than 'over' in that context.

'over' has only begun to be used a little more in the last 30 years. Before that it was hardly used at all with 'prefer'.

I'd stick to the more standard 'to'.
