Prefer followed by an -ing form

Good afternoon.

'I prefer to go home before it gets dark.'

This sounds correct to me; nevertheless there's a rule that says the verb 'prefer' is usually followed by an -in form.

How can you explain that?

Thank you.

"We can use a to-infinitive or an -ing form after prefer. A to-infinitive is more common." (Cambridge Dictionary)
