In my opiniom this sentence should sound like this: "I prefer rather to die than go on living like this."

I prefer to die rather than go on living like this. -- This is OK, but 'prefer' and 'rather' overlap in meaning.

I would rather die than go on living like this.
I prefer dying over living like this.
