Vocabulary

preface, foreword

Hi there!

In terms of style which is better preface or foreword? What's the difference? If I write a project and I write a preface, the appropriate word for the conclusion should be conclusion or afterword or maybe just epilogue?

Thanks

I think prologue and epilogue are only used for fictional works (with regard to writing anyway), but I could be wrong.

No, those are integral parts of the work. The preface never is and the foreword usually isn't, they just introduce it or describe it and many times aren't written by the author (esp. the preface).

So, if preface is never an integral part of the word and the forword introduces a work, in a serius work such as a dissertation which one would you use? If I use foreword, instead of intruduction can I use afterword instead of conclusion. Are 'introduction' and 'conclusion' the best words for an academic writing? They are so common that I would like to be more orginal. Any ideas?
