Predicates

I am helping my seventh grade daughter with predicates. I believe the rule is if it modifies the verb it's part of the predicate and if it modifies the noun it is part of the subject. Is this correct?

In the Sentence, I would identify the following as predicates (all caps)

AFTER SCHOOL, Tamera and Zalma WENT TO THE PARK.

In the following sentences my daughter believes "long silver" "several" are part of the predicates. I disagree and believe the following are correct; however, it has been 25 years since I've worked with subjects and predicates academically. I wanted to double check.

The long silver train STREAKED BY US.

Several motorcycles ZOOMED DOWN THE FREEWAY.

Can you help explain and advise

You are right on all counts. Your guideline works well except for linking verbs, where the complement modifies the subject but is still part of the predicate: This hat IS TOO SMALL.
