Pratice IELTS writing task 2

Some people believe that it is more important to teach children the literature of their own country than other countries. Do you agree or disagree?

Literature has been one of the most vital disciplines which are taught in schools. There is an opinion that greater importance should be placed on the literature of one’s country rather than that of foreign countries. In my view, all literature should be equally respected regardless of its origin.

On the one hand, proponents for national literature often argue that domestic novels and poems give students a strong sense of national and cultural identity. It is believed that local works, which were written by the ancestors of one’s nation, provide a link to children’s root, enabling them to have a deeper understanding of the traditions, customs and beliefs of their country. By having this fundamental knowledge, children are encouraged to learn and explore their culture in an effective way. For example, many Vietnamese poems, which were composed during the Vietnam war, have been used to promote patriotism among pupils.

On the other hand, neglecting foreign literature could result in a lack of understanding about other cultures, making children become less competent students and workers. The world is gradually becoming a global village, therefore, it is necessary to equip children with knowledge about the outside world. This helps them prepare for the upcoming challenges, such as studying abroad or working in an international enterprise. For instance, a book critic should be able to comment on various types of novels and essays, including those which come from other countries. Without studying foreign customs and cultures, it is extremely difficult to criticise those kinds of work.

In conclusion, although national literature plays a pivotal role in providing children in-depth knowledge about their own country, I believe that national borders should not be considered when it comes to education.
