Praised by the critics (cause and effect)

a. Praised by the critics, the film did well at the box office.

Would you say that there is necessarily a cause and effect relationship between the two parts of this sentence? Did the film do well at the box office because it was praised by the critics? My feeling is that that is a possible way to interpret the sentence, but it is not necessarily what it means.

b. Praised by the critics, the film did well at the box office.

(b) does not sound wrong to me (although it would probably work better if one used 'although' at the beginning).

Many thanks.

  • Had the 'praised by the critics' part been 'because it was praised by the critics' , the cause-effect relationship would have been clear.
  • It would still be possible to interpret the sentence that way, but the interpretation would then be implied rather than explicitly stated.
