Praise for his [well-done work]

(1) Thomas is a very diligent student. He receives much praise from his teachers for his well-done work.

One of my non-native English speaking friends made it up. My other friends and I thought about the phrase "well-done work" for a while. In the end, we agreed that it's ungrammatical.

Do you think the phrase in orange is awkward? Thank you very much for your opinion.

It seems OK to me, although we'd more commonly say 'his excellent work'.
