Practicing Grammar

Hello,

I am currently learning English grammar, but have no true way of practicing it. I had the idea of taking a few sentences from a chapter of a book that I was reading, and try analyzing the sentences with the grammar I would have learned at that point. Does this sound like a good idea? Do any of you, perhaps, have any better ideas?

Hi Bashy, Grammar has many different divisions. As you have suggested, you can pick out in text passages that particular aspect of grammar you are studying at the moment. For text, the American COCA is an excellent source for contemporary language, and of course the classics ( Project Gutenberg ) would be good for historic language.

Well, I tried to employ this idea with a book I am currently reading, that book being Journey To The Center Of The Earth by Jules Verne, and it was rather daunting. Most of the sentences I randomly chose were quite complex, having lots of punctuation distributed in them. I am not sure what I should do.

Pick a different book, perhaps something from the 20th century. Styles have changed from the 19th century.

That's a remarkable idea: pick something from a more modern era, because the writing is much simpler. I'll try that. Thank you.

I don't think you can practice English grammar. You write like a native speaker already, so I don't see any point in learning to label the words of sentences with names taken from grammar books, if that's what you think is meant by "practicing English grammar". Besides, d

Another idea is to post a sentence from "Journey to the Center of the Earth" that befuddles you, and let us have a go at it. Emotion: smile
