Practice SAT question

I work as a tutor for the SAT and I'm a bit intrigued by this problem.

We have the following sentence:

Balloon angioplasty is often the preferred method to remove fatty deposits in major heart arteries, replacing heart bypass surgery, which is a more invasive procedure. No error.

Apparently, of the underlined portions, the error is "to remove" (which should be replaced with "of removing").

I've also heard it argued that "to remove" is not technically incorrect. Is it or is it not incorrect? And why? What's the principle behind this?

Thanks,

"Of removing" certainly is grammatical. That being said, based on the tone and context of the sentence, the infinitive form, "to remove" is my choice as well. It infers t
