PPC or PC

Which sentence is correct and why?
1. What were you doing before the teacher walked into the classroom today?
2. What had you been doing before the teacher walked into the classroom today?

Of course, the second, because, in the first case, yuo only say it in that way : What were you doing when the teacher walked into the classroom today? it is the certain moment. but the first one is the one activity after another, so the first sentence is correct.

Thank you very much for your reply. Does it mean that with "before" in that case you can't use PC? Why?
What were you doing ... (since this morning before the teacher came)?
What is the diffrence between that sentence and this:
What were you doing since 4a.m. to 5p.m.?

Both are correct. There are many cases where PC and PPC are both correct. If the time relationships are clear from the other words in the sentence, you don't have to use PPC. Just PC is enough.
