Power

Hi, how do I know when power mean "force" or power like in "great powers"?

In "a countervailing power" my guess is they mean to force, but in "group of powers" I'm not sure if they mean to force or to great powers?

"In the post-Cold War era, the absence of a countervailing power or a group of powers in the system allowed the US the opportunity to dominate world politics."

No—in your sentence, both refer to other powerful governments. 'Countervailing modifies both 'power' and 'group of powers'. As with any word that has multiple definitions, context and previous knowledge must determine which definition applies.

Hi, Another power word in my text, my guess is that power here is "force" and not power like in great power?

"The Russian-Chinese co-ordination on many world issues, including in the UN Security Council, makes it almost certain that the West will, from now on, face tougher resistance to its polices from underprivileged powers in the international system."
