I am trying to write a short story and ran into a question about point of view. In the sentence:
"I failed me exam," James replied, looking critically at his report card.
Is it okay to add "looking critically" ? I am not sure if James himself is able to see he is looking critically at the repor card, so that is what I am confused about.
All help is appreciated!!
Thank you!

James is not aware, of course. It is the author's expression outside the quotation marks. The POV is fine.
