Americans call them chips. What our friends overseas calls "chips" we call "French fries."

Thanks, GG.
To make sure, does "potato crisps" in the base sentence also refer to "French fries?"

No no!

American chips = British crisps

American fries = Britich chips

Crisps are NEVER the same as fries!

This refers to chips/crisps.
