Pot plant or potted plant

Is there any difference between "pot plant" and "potted plant"?

Dictionary definitions are similar in that both appear to be able to be used to desribe either the kind of plant suitable to keep in a pot, as well as the pot and plant as a single object.

I think it could be the former is Br.E and latter Am.E, but no source backs that up.

Thanks!

For both Br. and Am. English pot plant would be a better word. Pot plant is a noun combination.

However, I feel a subtle nuances of meaning between the two.

Sorry, Hrsanei, I disagree. I think to many Americans, "pot plant" would immediately suggest "marijuana plant." I've never heard anyone refer to an ordinary houseplant as a pot plant.

Use "potted plant," "indoor plant" or "houseplant."

Hi,

I've always said, and I think heard, eg 'I bought a potted plant'.

Maybe Americans say 'I bought a pot plant'. I don't know.

Thank you Khoff.

My mistake.

The only time I've ever heard the term "pot plant" is when someone is talking about marijuana. In all other contexts use "potted plant."

Thanks. That is inline with what I found.

I'll check with the Br.E and compare.

Strange. In SA, I never heard anyone using "potplant" in reference to marijuana. Then again, we use it far more frequently than "potted plant."

Hi,

Where's SA, please?

South America?

South-east Asia?

Speaking as an American, we would never say pot plant unless we were speaking about Marijuana. It would always be a potted plant.
