Post tense and present tense in a subordinate clause

Happy Sunday:

Why sometimes people say:

"I said he needs to see the car." instead of " I said he needed to see the car."

What's the difference between the needs and needed?

Thanks,

Ench.

Hi, The difference is that in the second sentense you mention that someone had needed something once in the past, whereas in the first sentense he/she is still "in need".
