Possible questions to describe a Room

Hi teachers,
If the sentence is, 'The room was cold and dark, and there was a terrible smell in it.
Could these be appropriate questons?
a) How was the room?
b) What did the room look like?
c) What was the room like?

One more question please. I have never understood why I can use the verb 'be' in the asnswer. Is there a reason?

The answerer can just choose to answer by describing the room. eg It was dark.

What answer would you prefer?

It is fine the verb to be, because it is a description. My question is why we can't use the verb 'be' in the question too.
