Grammar

possessives with parentheses

When using a possessive with an acronym, for instance: "This letter is in reply to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) inquiry...", have I positioned the apostrophe in the correct place?

This is a question of style, not grammar, so there will not be a prescriptive answer. I just looked in Chicago and couldn't find an answer. My suggestion would to rewrite - This letter is in reply to the inquiry sent by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

  • Or, skip the abbreviation if this is the first mention, and use it the second time.
