Possessives for Countries: America's vs. American

Hi all,

I'm wondering about the difference between possessives for countries. I've tried looking online but I couldn't find any definitive answer.

What is the difference between, for example, Japan's and Japanese?

1] The Japanese seas...
2) Japan's seas....

They both sound okay to me.

However, another example:

3) America's GDP....
4) American GDP....

I know that 3) is correct and 4) just sounds wrong, but when asked the difference I couldn't explain it.

Can someone help me with this, please?

Thanks in advance.

  • One or the other may fit better into a text's style.
