Possessives

which one is correct? "I'm a friend of Reeta's." or "I'm a friend of Reeta."
Is it imp to add the apostrophe after the name?

(2) This is what my teachers taught me:

(a) Of course, we always use the possessive pronoun: I'm a friend of herS.

(b) So my teachers told me that it would be preferable (though not necessary) to use the possessive if we mention her actual name: I'm a friend of Reeta's.
