Possessive 's

Good morning to all,

I would like to know which of these sentences is gramatically correct:

1) This was discussed in a previous work of the Author's

or

2) This was discussed in a previous work of the Author

I remember that when there's the "a" (as in ... a previous work of) then the Author should have an "s"

thanks in advance

Both of these are OK: This was discussed in a previous work of the author/ author's . The article 'a' has nothing to do with it.

HI... thanks for the quick reply.

I thought the rule had something to do wth the rule for " a fiend of mine"... does it?

Mister Micawber, this must be the third (?) time we disagree.

I see nothing to disagree about. The original poster was relying on 'a' to determine the form of the possessive (of-genitive vs post-genitive). I said that 'a' is irrelevant. I now offer as an example:

This was discussed in a previous work of the Author's
This was discussed in the previous work of the Author's
This was discussed in a

Perfectly fine: This is the previous work of mine that I mentioned on the phone to you.

Perfectly fine with me as well with the relative clause but I have my doubts about this:

This is my newest painting but my friend hasn't seen even the previous work of mine.

Hmmm. My ear doesn't accept the second one.
