Possessive question

Hi

I am having difficulty with learning about possessive form.

The exercise says we add 's to a noun (or just ' after a plural noun or word that ends in "s") to indicate the possessive form. ie the noun owns or has got something.

Could you tell me if my answers are correct please if I have understood.

The child's parent (stays the same) because the child does not own his or her parent

the girl's school (stays the same) because the girl does not own her school

The country's leader (becomes The countrys' leader) because the country has something (a leader)

The woman's hat (becomes The womans' hat) because the woman owns her hat

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi, I don't understand your problem. They were all ok... The child's parent The girl's school The country's leader The woman's hat They were all in the singular.

  • If you have plural nouns ending in 's' then you just add the apostrophe: The girls' school But note that if the plural doesn't end in 's' because it's irregular, then you still add both the apostrophe and an 's': The children's school The women's hats That's what I learned.

The woman's hat

They were all in the singular. If you have plural nouns ending in 's' then you just add the apostrophe:

The girls' school

Ok, I deleted the other thread you started, since it's the same as this.

Well, it depends if they are irregular or not.
"Girl" is not irregular, so you can just add the 's': one girl, two girls.
"Country" is not irregular, but it ends in a consonant plus 'y'. In cases like these you need to replace that final 'y' with 'ies': one country, two countries.

So if I have The child's parent then I have to change child to children to make plural is this correct?

Thank you again for your help

Yes, because the plural of child is "children". It's irregular. There are other irregular nouns in the plural, they are just a few and you will learn them over time.
