Possessive nouns

Hi.
Why do we say John's blood but zinc atom not zinc's atom?
Is there a clear rule in this regard?

Not a clear one, but the atom does not belong to the zinc in the same way that the blood belongs to John, since John is sentient and can be an owner, while inanimate objects are generally used as adjectives describing the kind of e.g. atom.
