Possessive Noun Questions

Hi,

I've studied Possessive Nouns in some detail and know quite a lot about them. However when asked these questions, I couldn't understand what they were asking as it seemed what I was supposed to be changing was already correct, here they are:

We add 's to a noun (or just ‘ after a plural noun or word that ends in "s") to indicate the POSSESSIVE form, i.e. the noun owns or has got something. E.g. The girl's mother, James' car. Put ALL NOUNS in these phrases into the plural form using the POSSESSIVE form where appropriate.

E.g. 1. The boy's toy. 2. The child's parent. 3. The girl's school. 4. The country's leader. 5. The woman's hat.
The example above used was Eg.1 The boy's toy --> The boy's toys.

Do I simple add an "s" to all the final words (nouns) there?

Top answer

Hi, They want you to put the possessor into the plural. eg 3. The girl's school.

  • Hi, They want you to put the possessor into the plural.
  • eg 3.
  • The girl's school.
  • Change this to indicate that there are several girls.
  • In some of these examples, you might wish to change 'what is possesed' to the plural, too, to make more sense.

Hi,

They want you to put the possessor into the plural.
eg 3. The girl's school. Change this to indicate that there are several girls.

In some of these examples, you might wish to change 'what is possesed' to the plural, too, to make more sense.

The girls' school.

Th womens' hats.

I'm still not entirely sure?

Semantically, it makes a bit more sense to say The countries' leaders.

Not to mention that the instructions said
"Put ALL NOUNS in these phrases into the plural form."

I believe leaderis a noun.

Hi,
And what about

parents? schools? and leaders?

example shows the boy's toys and your explanation shows the women's hats.

I am confused too.

Hi daran,

Can you be a bit more clear about what is causing you confusion?
The boy's toy became the boys' toys in the excercise.
The plural of woman is women. When you mark one of these irregular plural nouns (ones that don't end in S) as possessive, the ' goes before the S. Women's, children's.
Please be specific if you have other questions.

well you have to ask your self is there already an s in that word if so then you add the possessive sign
