Please somebody help me in the following.

This is her book.

That is my cup.

In the above sentences her and my are possessive adjectives are possessive pronouns?

Top answer

They are adjectives, the possessive case of 'she' and 'I' respectively. As an object pronoun: I saw her yesterday . The object pronoun for 'I' is of course 'me'.

Thanks, M.M. for your help. I was just consulting my dictionary for it when u replied. But to my great surprise Her has not been mentioned in my dictionary as an adjective, but as a pronoun and determiner. In the later case its function was the same as in adjective. Could you pleas tell me the difference between determiner and this form of adjective (her pen)? Thanks.

Possessive adjectives:

This is [my / your / his / her / our / their] [cup / book / ...].

Possessive pronouns:

This [cup / book / ...] is [mine / yours / his / hers / ours / theirs].

The problem is The US English put "her and my" as pronouns in whatever cases (My son's text book says so). It is very confusing. And I do not understand why.

Both terms are used. In many European countries they are called possessive pronouns even though they do not replace a noun. This term is probably based on terminology used by Latin gra

In the above sentence, her and my are possessive adjectives.

If we write the sentences as --

This book is hers.

That cap is mine.

'Hers' and 'mine' are possessive pronouns.
