Possessive

2. Why do some Americans think their being discriminated is MORE important than other minorities in America?
3. We heard of their having discovered another stream.

4. In his research paper, Dr. Frosh, medical director of the Payne Whitney Clinic, distinguishes mood swings, which may be violent without their being grounded in mental disease, from genuine manic-depressive psychosis.


ETS says THEIR in sentence four is Redundant. and instead prefers sentence below; If so in all above cases I feel that THEIR is redundant...When is POSSESSIVE ?

I think you can omit "there" only in the first sentence. In sentence #2 without the there it's not clear who is being discriminated, which changes the intended meaning. The same goes for sentence #3.

I think you can omit "there" only in the first sentence. In sentence #2 without the there it's not clear who is being discriminated, which changes the intended meaning. The same goes for sentence #3.
