Possessive

Rabies almost always kills ITS/THE victims unless they are inoculated.

Guys,

I am always confused whether to go for possessive pronoun or article in the sentences such as above? Can someone give me insights into a rule when to choose one over other?

I would like to help, but I don't know what characteristics you are including and excluding that would qualify a given sentence to be "such as above". There must be thousands of

I guess my advice was confusing.

In the examples you give, both are "correct," but the possessive is less ambiguous. (Prior context could possibly give "the victims" another meaning.)

There may be cases in which one of the options is ruled out as incorrect.
