possessive

Hi,

Do we need to make of a possessive of this?

1) in the same neighborhood as Jane

2) in the same neighborhood as Jane's

I think we use the first version normally and I wonder why.

They both seem awkward to me. I would say 'in Jane's neighborhood'.

I agree with Philip. Just say 'Yesterday Tom was in Jane's neighbourhood' if you mean 'the neighbourhood that Jane lives in'.

On the other hand, if you say 'Yesterday Tom was in the same neighbourhood as Jane', this means that Tom and Jane were in the same neighbourhood. Perhaps they saw each other.
