Vocabulary

Positively

Hi
What does 'positively' mean in:
"Blood serotonin is higher in boys with childhood- versus adolescent-onset CD and is positively associated with violence in adolescence"
from: http://focus.psychiatryonline.org/article.aspx?Volume=2&page=558&journalID=21

Isn't it redundant?

Top answer

As adolescent violence increases, blood serotonin increases (and/or vice versa). Both increase or both decrease: that is a positive association. A negative association is when A increases while B decreases.

So you told me what positive and negative association are, but can we change 'association' to 'correlation' in the above sentence without change of meaning?

Yes, that would be a good choice.
