positions will be (opened/opening)

... to fulfill positions that will soon be (opened/ opening).

Which is correct, opened or opening in this sentence? If both are correct, are there any differences?

FYI
I googled both "positions will be opened" and "positions will be opening" and both have more than a million results as below;

Thousands of Army positions will be opened to women
ETS Board Director positions will be opened for election...
New positions will be opened tonight!

Two positions will be opening at the ...
... when one of the paid positions will be opening soon.
Many of these positions will be opening and closing throughout the academic year;

Thank you very much.

They are both correct. If the person/people who opened the position is mentioned or important then "opened" may be preferred, but in most cases there is effectively little difference in meaning. Makiasan both have more than a million results as below I am sceptical of Google's huge random numbers.

  • Even when you put search phrases in quotes, the reported numbers bear no relation to the actual number of retrievable results.
  • For example, in this case, if you actually page through the results, "positions will be opened" turns out to return "about 370 results" and "positions will be opening" returns "about 278 results".
