Positions of adverbs

In what context we use "adverb + verb" or "verb + adverb" to modify the verb? Is there any difference between these two positions of adverbs? Thanks in advance.
For example:
1. She smiled cheerfully.
2. She cheerfully smiled.
Which is more common?
