Position/location

Hello everyone.

Would you please help me with the following:

He can usually be found standing against a post off to the left at the entrance of the city

-What does this mean? Does it mean that for someone who has arrived at the entrance and is facing it, they're to look to the left and there he will be, standing against a post?

-Could off to the left there be far as in a, say, hundred meters, or does it mean within the entrance's grounds/area, to the side?

Thank you.
