Positioning of when (/while)

1) When someone stole John's car last night, he was sleeping. (does it imply that the reader is already aware of the fact that someone's stolen John's car? )

2) John was sleeping last night when someone stole his car.
a) does it mean : John was sleeping and someone stole his car?
(b) or is it the same as the first sentence? - consider : 'what was John doing when someone stole his car? John was sleeping when someone stole his car.'

While John was sleeping last night, someone stole his car.
John was sleeping last night when someone stole his car

Do these two have the same meaning?
