Position or role?

Yokohama will retire at the end of the month , and his son will assume the ................ of company vice president on behalf of him .

I think either B or C is correct. But if I have to choose one, I choose B. Is it correct? I would appreciate it if anyone help me. Which choice is preferred?

Role sounds better to me. It's fancier more important-sounding. Instead of on behalf of him , I'd say on his behalf.
