Position of words in the sentence

I would like to know if the word order in the following sentence is correct:

"Much had changed, however, after the political decision, twenty years after the conquest of Granada, whereby the population converted to Christianity, the moriscos, were expelled from the country."

Thank you in advance.

Too many commas. When you find yourself doing that, it is time to recast: However, much had changed after the political decision, twenty years after the conquest of Granada, to expel from the country the moriscos , the population converted to Christianity.
