Position of the be verb of reported speech

I wrote the following two sentences to understand the usage of "ask" well. However, I'm not sure about the position of "were" in the following sentence. Therefore, I would really appreciate it if someone could provide me with explanation to understand the construction. Both are possible but the usual form is "He asked what my hobbies were".

The underlined element is a subordinate interrogative clause (embedded question) where the meaning can be glossed as:

"He asked me (for) the answer to the question
