Position of 'always'

Hi teachers,
Which is the right position for 'always'?
The rule says that adverbs of frequency are after the verb be in affirmative and negative sentences, but after the subject in wh-questions and yes/no questions.

Then it is 'a'. Right?
a) How many hours were Felix and Adam always behind Alex?
Three or more.
b) How many hours were always Felix and Adam behind Alex?
Three or more.

Right, (a) is the correct order. However, it still seems faintly awkward to me, albeit I do not see any other simple way of saying it. That rule is not without exceptions, by the way.

Right, (a) is the correct order. However, it still seems faintly awkward to me, albeit I do not see any other simple way of saying it.

That rule is not without exceptions, by the way. E.g. "You're in a good mood today!" / "I always am!".

"During the chasing" does not feel terribly natural. You could say "During the chase" or "As/While they were chasing him".
