Reading the grammar text, I noticed the below example being indicated by the asterisk.

* The boys waved all at the girls.
(The original sentence : All of the boys waved at the girls.)

? and what I understand is that the above example with an asterisk is correct if 'all' is treated as an adverb having its scope to the following phrase 'at the girls'

?But in the sense of meaning, it can't be used the way it appears to convey the same meaning as being represented in the original sentence.
So that makes this sentence wrong.

Are those two of my thoughts on the right track?

Then the example sentence is incorrect no matter what parts of speech the word 'all' is.
So, it would be possible to generalize that,
[verb + all + preposition] is impossible. Is it right thinking?
