Position of adverbs

Is it acceptable to place an adverb of manner between the predicate and an object clause?

e.g.

"He asked nervously what to do."

Is it acceptable to place an adverb of manner between the predicate and an object clause?

e.g.

"He asked nervously what to do."

That's OK, but not if it's not a clause. For example, you don't want

He asked nervously a question.

This should be He asked a question nervously.
