Hi,
“John has a big exam in two days, so he’s in his room poring over books.”
Could ‘pore over’ be used when talking about someone who’s reading something thoroughly? (usually studying)
I know that I could say ‘read’ instead, but I’d like to know if ‘pore over’ is appropriate or if it’s more often found in literature.
Thank you. ![]()

The given sentence is perfectly grammatical, but not natural-sounding. You'd say this as: "John has...in his room poring over the books." The phrase, "poring over the books," is idiomatic in this situation.
