population plural or singular

"half the world’s population lives in cities" or "half the world's population live in cities"
Which is right or are they both right??

I would say that ‘population’ is a singular word: (The population is growing.)
Thus ‘half the world’s population lives in cities’. However, my natural instinct when speaking is to think that ‘half live in cities’. So, to me, both are acceptable.
