Popular or popularity

Hi,

In a school test, students were asked to match definitions to their correct words. The example below they gave as a demonstration was like this:

'When something is liked by people'=( and they chose) 'popularity'.

The choice made me confused because I think it had to be 'popular'.I need your help, please.
