Popular detective or crime novel in the UK

I don't normally read Detective novels but I think the most famous UK detective would be Sherlock Holmes. As for a Sherlock Holmes novel try "The Hound of the Baskervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I don't know if it is the best as I said before, Dectective books are not my normal reading material.
