Pop voice

Hello,

What does "assumes a pop voice" and "keening over the airwaves" mean here?

Thank you!

In modern cities like Bamako, the capital, Islamic culture often assumes a pop voice, with devotional music keening over the airwaves.

I've seen it in a recently published New York Times article, "A Tribute to Islam, Earthen but Transcendent".

Since English is not my first language, I found it very understand this sentence.
