poor excuse for

Would it be correct to say that about food?

Sushi is poor excuse for Japanese food.

Top answer

That would not be good usage, since sushi is Japanese food and can be quite elaborate. You might say instead: packaged instant ramen, made in America, is a (the indefinite article is required) poor excuse for Japanese food.
