Vocabulary

Pony between two elephants.

Hello!

I read a sentence in an article, I want to know the meaning of a phrase in this sentence.

"The people of Country X have long dismissed their country as "a pony between two elephants", that is country Y and country Z. They consider their country as a pony struck between two elephants. The two neighbours X and Y have sometimes squeezed and sometimes helped the country X "

I understand this as some local phrase/idiom translated into English. As I have understood it could mean a small/weak country which is positioned geographically between two giant countries. And the two giant neighbours have sometimes been friendly and sometimes hostile towards this landlocked, small country.

I want to know whether any such phrase exists in English, if not, please tell me whether the intended meaning is right in my perspective.

Thank you Emotion: smile

  • Ramkryp I want to know whether any such phrase exists in English - Not that I am aware of, but that does not mean there isn't one.
  • There is the expression "to be stuck between a rock and a hard place", which sort of fits, but it lacks the geographic aspect.
