Wow. My google-fu has grown weak. Everybody bandies the word about, but nobody defines it but these guys:

"Arbitrarily defined part of the universe, regardless of form or size, e.g. for clinical chemistry, patient, patient plasma, patient urine."

I would take it as '(molecular) configurations'.

I'm guessing that each of the four types has a different set of chemical properties, but that's just a guess.
